Bladder Botox (Botox for overactive bladder)

Facts

  • Local anesthesia, sometimes general anesthesia
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Procedure lasts 30-60 minutes
  • Adjustment of urination within 2 days

The procedure is performed under local or short-term general anesthesia, with botulinum toxin injected into the bladder musculature from individual punctures (20 - 40 punctures in total) under optical control.

After the procedure, a urinary catheter is sometimes left in place and blood in the urine may appear.

In some patients, problems with urinating (problems with emptying urine) may occur and it is necessary to repeatedly catheterize the bladder until urination is regulated.

Botulinum toxin works for around 10 - 12 months, after which the procedure can be repeated.
